Understanding Record Reviews: Ensuring Your Child’s Educational Needs Are Met
What to Expect
Record Reviews:
A record review involves a thorough examination of a child’s educational history, including previous evaluations, assessments, and IEPs (Individualized Education Programs). This review is typically conducted to ensure that the child's current educational services are based on accurate and up-to-date information. Record reviews are often requested when there are concerns about the adequacy of the current educational plan or when transitioning to new services or placements.
Review Process:
During a record review, the IEP team, including parents, educators, and specialists, will analyze the child’s performance data, past evaluations, and any reports from teachers, therapists, or other professionals involved. The goal is to identify patterns, ensure the child’s needs are being met, and determine if modifications to the educational plan are necessary.
Parental Involvement:
Parents will be informed and involved in the record review process. They have the right to request a review of their child’s educational records, ask for clarification, and ensure that the documents accurately reflect the child’s needs and progress. Expect to receive a summary of findings and any recommended changes.
Outcomes
For Record Reviews:
The outcome of a record review is a clearer understanding of how well the child’s educational needs are being met. If discrepancies or gaps are identified, adjustments to the child’s educational plan, services, or placement may be recommended. Record reviews help ensure that all decisions about the child’s education are based on complete and accurate information.
For Educational Adjustments:
If the review reveals that the current educational approach is not adequately supporting the child’s needs, changes may be made. This could include revising goals, modifying accommodations, or recommending a different educational setting to better meet the child’s needs. The goal is always to improve the child’s educational experience and outcomes.
For Continuous Monitoring:
A record review helps establish a foundation for ongoing monitoring of the child’s progress. Following a review, regular assessments and feedback loops will ensure that the child continues to receive the right services and interventions as their needs evolve.
